Oak Wilt Management in Austin
Oak wilt has killed live oaks across Central Texas for decades, and Austin is in the middle of it. Live oaks connect through their roots and form expanding circles of dying trees, and Texas red oaks can spread the disease above ground in spring. Timing pruning, painting wounds, trenching and injection are the tools that work.

Why live oaks spread oak wilt
Live oaks in Central Texas often grow in groups, called mottes, that share a connected root system. When one tree is infected, the fungus moves through those roots to its neighbors at a rate that can reach dozens of feet a year, leaving a widening ring of dead and dying oaks.
Above ground, the fungus forms spore mats under the bark of recently killed Texas red oaks and blackjack oaks in spring. Sap beetles feed on the mats and carry spores to fresh wounds on healthy oaks. That is why Texas guidance says not to prune oaks from February through June, and to paint every wound at any time of year.
Austin's west side, with its live oak woodlands on the Edwards Plateau, has seen some of the worst losses.

Can oak wilt be stopped in my neighborhood?
It can be slowed and often contained. A trench at least 4 feet deep, cut 100 feet or more beyond the leading edge of symptomatic trees, severs root connections. High-value oaks near an infection can be injected with propiconazole. Infected red oaks should be removed and their wood handled properly. Neighbors working together get the best results, because root systems cross lot lines.
- Trench
- Break root connections ahead of the spread.
- Inject
- Protect valued oaks nearby.
- Remove red oaks
- Stop spore mats forming.
Texas guidance and Austin rules
The Texas A&M Forest Service runs the Texas oak wilt program and publishes guidance on identifying, containing and preventing the disease. Its core rules are to avoid wounding oaks from February through June, paint all wounds immediately, and avoid moving firewood from diseased trees.
Austin's tree ordinance still applies to oak wilt work: removing a protected or heritage oak, or pruning 25 percent or more of its canopy, needs city review, even when the oak is diseased.

Austin oak wilt questions
When can I prune oaks in Austin?
July through January is safer. Avoid February through June, and paint wounds every time.
Do I need a permit to remove a diseased protected oak?
Yes. Protected and heritage tree rules still apply. Documentation of oak wilt helps the review.
Is oak wilt firewood dangerous?
Fresh firewood from diseased red oaks can carry the fungus. Season it fully under sealed plastic or dispose of it.
Can a live oak with oak wilt survive?
Some do, especially with early injection. Many in an active center die over one to several years.
