Storm Damage Tree Removal in Phoenix

A monsoon microburst can put a mesquite on the block wall, a palo verde across the driveway and palm fronds through the pool cage in ten minutes. This page covers the cleanup, in the order it should happen.

Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are answered by an independent tree service provider.

The first hour after the storm

  1. Look for wires

Any tree touching a line is the utility's problem first. Stay back and call APS or SRP.

  2. Check the wall and gate

A tree leaning on a block wall can push it over. Keep children and pets away from both sides.

  3. Check the pool equipment and gas line

Uprooted trees lift irrigation, pool plumbing and sometimes gas lines with their roots.

  4. Photograph everything

Before anything is cut or moved.

  5. Then call

Describe what the tree is resting on. That decides how soon a crew comes.

What a microburst leaves behind

Monsoon damage is intensely local. One neighborhood can have a tree down in every third yard while the next mile over is untouched. Crews are swamped in the hit area and idle elsewhere, so a company based across the valley may reach you sooner than one down the street.

Most failures are whole-tree. The tree tips with a shallow disc of roots attached, often no wider than the original planting hole. Limb breakage is the second pattern, especially in eucalyptus, old mesquite and trees thinned badly in the past.

Storms arrive in the evening and are followed by a hot, humid morning. Heat limits how long crews can work safely in July and August, which stretches cleanup over more days than the same job would take in spring.

Can the tree be stood back up?

SituationReset it?Why
Young tree, trunk under about four inches, tipped within the last dayOften yesRoots are still moist and mostly intact
Established tree lying flat with the root disc exposedNoMajor roots have broken. It will fall again.
Tree leaning but still rootedSometimesDepends on root damage. Needs correct staking and canopy reduction.
Trunk split or main limbs torn outNoStructure is gone

A reset tree needs wide, low stakes, deep watering and a lighter canopy. Even then, many fail in a later storm.

Damage in trees that stayed standing

  • Soil cracked or raised on one side

The root plate moved. The next gust may finish it.

  • A limb hanging by bark

It can drop at any time, without wind.

  • Torn bark down the trunk

A large wound that will sunburn and decay.

  • Palm crown bent to one side

The growing point may be damaged. Wait several weeks before judging.

Licensed contractor or the crew at the door

Licensed and verifiable

  • Registrar of Contractors number you can look up
  • Certificate of insurance from the insurer
  • Written scope before work
  • Still reachable next week

Door-knockers after a storm

  • Pressure to agree right now
  • No license number or a borrowed one
  • Damage to walls and irrigation left unresolved
  • No coverage if a worker is hurt on your property

Urgency is real when a tree is on the house. It is rarely so urgent that five minutes checking a license is impossible.

Getting rid of the debris

Hauled by the contractor
The usual arrangement. Confirm it is included.
City bulk trash
Phoenix sets rules on when bulk trash may be put out and how large branches can be. Check the city's current bulk trash system before stacking storm debris at the curb.
After major storms
The city has at times added special collections. Check its public works announcements.
Stumps and root balls
Not accepted in ordinary bulk pickup. They are ground or hauled.

Phoenix monsoon cleanup questions

How fast can a fallen tree be removed after a monsoon storm in Phoenix?

Trees on houses, cars and blocked driveways are usually handled within a day or two. Trees simply lying in a yard may wait a week or more when a large area was hit.

Will insurance cover removing a tree that fell in my Phoenix yard?

Generally only if it damaged a covered structure or blocks a driveway. A tree that fell on gravel and hit nothing is usually the owner's responsibility.

My tree blew over but is still green. Can I replant it?

If it is small and you act within a day or two, possibly. Large trees with broken roots do not re-anchor.

Whose problem is it when my tree lands in the neighbor's yard?

In a storm it is generally treated as an act of nature, and each owner's policy covers their own property. See a neighbor's tree fell in my yard for the general rule.
