Small Tree Removal
A small tree, roughly under 30 feet tall with a trunk under about 8 inches across, can often be removed in an hour or two with the stump. Size alone does not make it simple, though: a small tree against a house or under a line still needs care.
Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are answered by an independent tree service provider.

Can I remove a small tree myself?
Often, if it is under about 15 to 20 feet, nowhere near power lines or buildings, and you can cut it in small pieces from the ground. Anything requiring a ladder and chainsaw together, or near a structure, is a job for a crew.
- Usually DIY
- Saplings, shrubs that became trees, small ornamentals in open ground.
- Hire a crew
- Trees near lines, roofs, fences, or leaning trees.
- Permit check
- Some cities protect even small trees of certain species.
Small trees people remove most

- Bradford and Callery pear
- Break apart in storms and spread invasively.
- Overgrown crape myrtles
- Often removed when they outgrow a spot.
- Volunteer seedlings
- Maples, mulberries and hackberries along fences.
- Dead ornamental trees
- Dogwoods, cherries and Japanese maples that have declined.
- Evergreens grown too close
- Arborvitae and junipers planted near walls.
How a crew removes a small tree
Cut branches
Lower limbs removed from the ground with saws or pole saws.
Fell or section
The trunk is dropped in one piece in open ground or cut down in sections.
Chip debris
Branches go through a chipper.
Stump
The stump is ground or dug out depending on the plan.
What makes a small tree a bigger job
| Condition | Why it matters | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Near a power line | Contact risk | Utility disconnect and a professional crew |
| Leaning over a roof | Pieces must be lowered | Rope or aerial work |
| Multiple stems | Unpredictable weight shifts | Cut each stem separately |
| Thorny species | Hard to handle | Locust and hawthorn need protective gear |
| Dead for a year or more | Brittle wood breaks unpredictably | Cut from the ground or a lift, not a ladder |
| Growing through a fence | Trunk has swallowed wire or boards | Saw chains hit metal, so the fence section often comes out too |
| Protected species or street tree | City approval needed even when small | Check the city page before cutting |
Digging out or grinding the stump
Dig out
- Practical for trunks under about 6 inches
- Removes roots for replanting
- Done with a mattock and root saw
Grind
- Faster for larger stumps
- Leaves roots to decay
- Machine needed
If planting in the same place, dig out the stump and roots completely. See stump removal.
When to stop and call a professional
The trunk pinches the saw
Weight is shifting in a direction you did not expect.
The tree is hung up in another tree
Very dangerous to free. Leave it.
You need to cut above shoulder height
Chainsaw kickback risk is high.
Branches are near a line
Never cut them yourself.
Small trees that come back
Some small trees regrow from roots or stumps for years after removal. Tree of heaven, black locust, mimosa and Callery pear are among the worst. Cutting them without treating the stump often produces many new shoots.
For these species, see invasive tree removal for methods that prevent regrowth.
Native species behave differently. A small red maple, redbud or dogwood cut near the ground may send up a few sprouts in the first summer, but mowing or clipping them two or three times usually exhausts the roots. Conifers such as arborvitae, juniper and pine do not resprout at all once cut below the lowest green branch.
If the small tree is coming out to make room for another one, plan the replacement before the stump is dealt with. Digging the old root ball out by hand leaves loose soil that settles, so the new tree is best set a little to one side or planted after the hole has been filled and firmed.
Small tree questions
How long does small tree removal take?
Often under two hours for the tree and stump if access is easy.
Do I need a permit for a small tree?
In most places, no, but some cities protect specific species at small sizes, such as coast live oak in Oakland.
Can I just pull out a small tree?
Saplings can be pulled when the soil is wet. Larger trees need cutting and root work.
Should small tree stumps be treated?
For sprouting species, yes, to prevent regrowth. For most native trees, clipping any sprouts for a season is enough.
Can a small tree be moved instead of removed?
Often, if its trunk is under a few inches across and it is a species that transplants well. See tree transplanting for timing and root ball size.
What happens to the wood from a small tree?
Branches are usually chipped on site and the chips left as mulch or hauled away. Trunk pieces can be cut to firewood length if you ask before the work starts.
