Branch Clearance from the Roof
Branches touching a roof scrape shingles, fill gutters and give squirrels and rats a bridge into the attic. Most arborists recommend keeping branches several feet off the roof, and fire codes in many western areas require 10 feet from chimneys.

How far should branches be from a roof?
Six to ten feet is a common target, enough that branches will not touch when they sway in wind or droop under rain, snow or ice. In wildfire areas, codes often require 10 feet from chimneys and stovepipes and keeping dead branches off the roof altogether.
- Shingles and siding
- Branches should not rub even in strong wind.
- Chimneys
- Ten feet is the figure written into California law and many local fire codes.
- Animal access
- Squirrels jump several feet, so short gaps do little to keep them out.
What overhanging branches do to a house

- Shingle wear
- Rubbing strips the protective granules from asphalt shingles and eventually wears through them.
- Clogged gutters
- Leaves, needles, seed pods and twigs, plus overflow that soaks fascia boards.
- Moss and algae
- Shade keeps the roof damp, especially on north-facing slopes.
- Pest entry
- Roof rats and squirrels travel along branches to reach vents and soffits.
- Falling limbs
- Dead or weakly attached branches over the roof are the usual source of punctures.
How crews clear branches over a house
Tie off each limb
Branches over the roof are roped before cutting so they swing away from the house, not onto it.
Cut back to a side branch
Reduction cuts keep the tree healthy and the outline natural.
Lower to the ground
Pieces are lowered past gutters, windows and lights under control.
Clear the roof
Twigs, leaves and sawdust are blown or swept off, and gutters cleared.
Fire clearance rules over roofs
California Public Resources Code 4291 requires owners in state responsibility areas to remove any portion of a tree within 10 feet of a chimney or stovepipe outlet and to keep the roof free of dead leaves and needles. Many cities and counties in California, Oregon, Colorado and other western states have similar rules.
Firewise USA guidance recommends keeping branches off the roof and away from the home within the first five feet, where embers most often ignite structures. Check with the local fire department for the version that applies to your address.
Cut back the limb or take it out
Cut back
- The limb is healthy and well attached
- A side branch exists to cut to
- The shade is wanted
- Repeated light cuts are acceptable
Remove the limb
- The limb is dead, cracked or decayed
- It joins the trunk at a weak, narrow angle
- It would need cutting back every year
- It overhangs a bedroom
Removing a whole large limb at the trunk leaves a big wound, so reduction is usually tried first. If the tree itself is too close to the house, see tree removal near a house.
How often to clear the roof
| Growth rate | Examples | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Fast | Silver maple, willow, sweetgum, Leyland cypress | Every one to two years |
| Moderate | Red maple, pin oak, tulip tree | Every two to three years |
| Slow | White oak, beech, hickory | Every three to five years |

Roof clearance questions
Can I trim my neighbor's branches over my roof?
In most states you may trim branches that cross onto your property back to the line, at your own expense, provided you do not kill or seriously harm the tree. Talk to the neighbor first.
Will trimming branches stop gutter clogs?
It helps a great deal, but leaves from trees nearby still blow in. Gutter guards and cleaning remain part of the answer.
Is it safe to trim branches while standing on my roof?
No. Roof falls cause many serious injuries every year, and a chainsaw on a pitched roof multiplies the risk.
Does homeowners insurance care about overhanging branches?
Some insurers note overhanging branches during inspections and ask that they be cut back as a condition of coverage.
