Tree Removal and Tree Service in Tallahassee
Tallahassee is the city of canopy roads: old live oaks meeting over nine designated roads that total about 78 miles. Everything within 100 feet of a canopy road's centerline is a protection zone where clearing is barred except in narrow cases, and protected trees elsewhere fall under the city's environmental rules.

What a canopy road is
The canopy roads follow old routes into the city, many of them former farm and cattle trails cut into the red clay. Live oaks, water oaks, hickories and magnolias grew along the banks, and over a century their limbs met overhead. The roads include Old Bainbridge, North Meridian, Centerville, Miccosukee, Old St. Augustine and others.
The city and Leon County treat these trees as public infrastructure. A Canopy Roads Citizens Committee reviews development proposals near them, and both governments run maintenance programs that prune for clearance while protecting the arch.
For homeowners, the practical point is that a lot fronting a canopy road has a protection zone across its front. Removing a tree there, or even clearing understory, is not a routine job.

Can I remove a tree near a canopy road?
Generally not without approval. The Land Development Code bars clearing within the canopy road protection zone unless it is authorized for legal access where no alternative exists, for public health, safety or welfare, or for certain sidewalk improvements. Any removal must be offset by widening the zone and replanting.
- The zone
- All land within 100 feet of the road's centerline.
- Understory
- Removing understory is barred except under an approved vegetation management plan.
- Elsewhere in the city
- Protected trees are regulated under the city's environmental management rules.
Canopy road rules in the code
Section 5-81 of the Land Development Code sets the development standards inside canopy road zones, including review by the citizens' committee, a full impact analysis for development and placement of the protection zone in a conservation easement.
Away from canopy roads, the city's environmental management ordinance regulates removal of protected trees on development sites and in other situations. Leon County, which manages most canopy road miles outside the city, publishes a map of the designated roads.

Tallahassee tree questions
How many canopy roads does Tallahassee have?
Nine officially designated roads, about 78 miles in total, including roads that extend into Leon County.
Who prunes trees along canopy roads?
The city or Leon County, depending on who maintains the road. Residents should not prune them.
Is Spanish moss killing my oak?
No. Spanish moss is an epiphyte that takes nothing from the tree. Heavy loads can add weight in storms.
Does the state risk exemption apply in Tallahassee?
Florida Statute 163.045 lets residential owners remove a documented unacceptable-risk tree without a local permit. Canopy road trees on public right-of-way are not private trees.
