Tree Trimming in Honolulu

Nothing stops growing on Oahu. Trees that would be pruned every five years on the mainland need attention every one to three here, and coconut palms over walkways need it several times a year.

Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are answered by an independent tree service provider.

Why coconut palms are a liability question

A mature coconut weighs two to four pounds and falls from 40 to 80 feet. A full frond weighs considerably more. Either can seriously injure a person and will dent a car or crack a tile roof.

For that reason, hotels, condominium associations and most homeowners with palms over used areas keep them on a trimming contract. The interval is set by how fast the palm produces fruit, which depends on water and sun. Irrigated palms in Waikiki and Kahala fruit continuously.

Some owners choose to have palms over pools and entries replaced with non-fruiting species, or have flower stalks removed early so nuts never form. Both are reasonable ways to cut long-term upkeep.

Over-trimming palms

The rule
Leave fronds that are level or above. Remove only those hanging below horizontal, along with fruit and flower stalks.
The hurricane cut
Trimming a palm to a few upright fronds weakens it and narrows the trunk at that point, a defect that stays for life.
Climbing spikes
Spur holes in a palm trunk never close. Good crews use lifts, ladders or rope techniques where they can.
Tool hygiene
Saws should be disinfected between palms to avoid spreading disease.

Setting up a trimming schedule

  1. Inventory

Count the trees and note which stand over places people walk, park or sit.

  2. Set intervals by risk

High-use areas get the shortest cycle. Back-corner trees can go longer.

  3. Fix the scope

Write down what is removed at each visit so companies can be compared on the same work.

  4. Include green waste

Hauling is part of the job, and on Oahu the material should go promptly to an approved facility.

  5. Review yearly

Trees grow, and uses change. Adjust the cycle.

Crown reduction and hat-racking

Reduction

  • Limbs shortened back to a living side branch
  • Natural outline kept
  • Regrowth is moderate and well attached
  • Repeated every few years

Hat-racking

  • Limbs cut to bare stubs at a set height
  • Dozens of fast, weak shoots from each stub
  • Decay enters at every cut
  • Needs redoing within a year or two, and the tree is weaker each time

In a year-round growing climate, a topped monkeypod or mango can be back to its old height in 18 months with far worse structure. Reduction takes more care per visit and far less work over a decade.

When to schedule

  • Act now

Coconuts are visibly full-sized over a walkway

Trim now and shorten the cycle.

  • This week

Hurricane season is approaching and big shade trees have not been pruned in years

Book dead-wood removal and limb reduction before June.

  • Plan it

    A mango has finished fruiting

Prune for size in the weeks after harvest.

  • Plan it

A large old tree on the lot may be a registered exceptional tree

Check with the county before anything beyond light pruning.

Honolulu tree trimming questions

What decides how big a coconut trimming job is in Honolulu?

The number of palms, their height and the access to them. A regular schedule keeps each visit short. Get the scope in writing to compare companies.

Can coconuts be stopped from forming?

Removing the flower stalks at each visit prevents nuts from developing. On a regular cycle this keeps the palm free of heavy fruit.

Is it legal to trim a street tree in front of my Honolulu home?

No. Street trees are maintained by the city's Division of Urban Forestry. Ask the city.

Does a tree trimmer need a license in Honolulu?

Above the state's small-project exemption, yes, under the C-27b tree trimming and removal classification. Ask for the license and for workers' compensation coverage.
