Palm Tree Trimming

A well-trimmed palm still has a full, round crown. Only dead fronds, fronds hanging well below horizontal, and flower and fruit stalks are cut. The tight, upright shaving-brush look left by heavy trimming starves the palm and weakens its trunk.

How many fronds should be left on a palm?

Every green frond at or above horizontal. Picture a clock face on the crown: fronds between 9 and 3 o'clock stay. Fronds that are completely brown, or hanging well below the 9 to 3 line, can go. University of Florida guidance is that palms should never be trimmed above horizontal.

Remove
Fully dead fronds, hanging fronds, flower and fruit stalks, and coconuts.
Keep
All green fronds at or above horizontal, and the spear leaf at the center.
Wait
Fronds that are only partly yellow, especially on palms with nutrient problems.

Proper trimming and the hurricane cut

Proper trimming

  • Round, full crown left
  • Only dead or hanging fronds removed
  • Trunk keeps a steady diameter
  • Palm keeps its nutrient reserves

Hurricane cut

  • Crown cut to a few upright fronds
  • Palm moves nutrients out of the remaining fronds
  • Trunk narrows below the crown over time
  • Weaker in high wind, not stronger

The trunk narrowing caused by repeated overtrimming is called pencil-pointing. Palms commonly snap at that narrow point in storms.

Why yellow fronds should sometimes stay

Potassium deficiency is the most widespread nutrient problem in Florida palms. It shows as yellow or orange speckling on the oldest fronds. Those fronds look untidy, but the palm is drawing potassium out of them to feed new growth. Cutting them takes that supply away and pushes the deficiency into the younger fronds.

The advice from palm researchers is to leave partly yellow fronds in place until they are completely brown, and correct the deficiency with a palm fertilizer containing slow-release potassium and magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency, common on Canary Island date palms, looks similar, with a yellow band along the outer edge of older fronds. The same rule applies.

How a palm is trimmed

  1. Reach the crown

From a ladder or pole saw for short palms, and from a bucket lift or by a climber with a belt and lanyard for tall ones.

  2. Sterilize tools

Saws are cleaned or blades swapped between palms to avoid spreading Fusarium wilt and other diseases.

  3. Cut dead fronds

Close to the trunk without cutting into it.

  4. Remove stalks and fruit

Flower and seed stalks are cut at the base; coconuts are lowered rather than dropped.

  5. Bundle and haul

Fronds are tough and fibrous, so they are usually hauled rather than chipped.

Spikes, disease and local rules

Climbing spikes leave permanent wounds in a palm's trunk because palms cannot grow new tissue over them. Florida extension guidance and palm industry standards say spikes should not be used on palms that are being kept. Climbers use a belt and rope, or the work is done from a lift.

Several counties and cities in Florida and California require tree work licenses or registrations that also apply to palm work. Some Florida municipalities regulate palm trimming as part of their landscape codes.

How often common palms need trimming

PalmTrimming needMain reason
Queen palmTwice a yearHeavy, messy seed crops and hanging dead fronds
Mexican fan palmYearlyDead frond skirt that harbors rats and catches fire
Canary Island date palmYearlySpiny fronds and seed stalks; strict tool hygiene
Royal palmSeldomSelf-cleaning; fallen fronds are heavy
Coconut palmSeveral times a yearNuts that can fall and injure people
Sabal palmYearly or lessSeed stalks and old fronds

Signs a palm is due for trimming

  • A brown skirt of hanging fronds

Fire and pest concern, especially on fan palms.

  • Seed stalks heavy with fruit

Dropping fruit stains pavement and attracts animals.

  • Coconuts forming over walkways

Remove before they mature and fall.

  • Fronds touching the roof

    Clear them before storm season.

Palm trimming questions

When is the best time to trim palms?

Late spring or summer, after flower stalks appear and before storm season. Avoid heavy trimming before winter in cold-sensitive areas, since old fronds offer some frost protection.

Can I trim a palm tree myself?

Short palms that you can reach from the ground, yes. Tall palms need a lift or a trained climber, and fronds of some species have sharp spines.

Does trimming make a palm grow faster?

No. It removes stored nutrients, which can slow growth.

Should the trunk be skinned smooth?

Some owners like the look. It is cosmetic, and cutting into living trunk tissue while skinning can harm the palm.
