Tree Removal and Tree Service in Charleston, West Virginia

Charleston fills a narrow river valley, and most of its residential streets climb the hills on either side. Trees grow above and below the houses, so nearly every removal here is a slope job.

A city built on its hillsides

The flat land along the Kanawha and Elk rivers holds downtown, the East End and the West Side. Everything else goes up: South Hills, Edgewood, Fort Hill and Loudon Heights are reached by switchback roads, and many houses have a retaining wall on one side and a drop on the other.

The woods never left these neighborhoods. Tulip poplar, oak, hickory, beech and sycamore grow on every undeveloped bank, and they shed limbs onto roofs, roads and power lines in each strong storm.

Dead ash stand throughout those woods. They were killed by emerald ash borer over the past fifteen years and now break apart piece by piece.

How hillside lots change a job

Trucks stay on the road
A lift or chipper can rarely leave the pavement. Climbers do most of the work.
Everything is roped
Cut sections are lowered under control so they do not roll downhill into a house or road.
Wood may stay on site
Hauling logs up a steep bank is slow. Stacking them on the slope by agreement saves time.
Stumps are left
Roots hold the bank. Grinding on a steep slope is seldom done.
Road closures
On a one-lane hillside street, the job may block traffic for hours and needs coordination.

City, utility and owner responsibilities

Charleston does not require a permit to remove a tree on private property, and West Virginia has no arborist license. Trees along city streets and in parks are public, and concerns about them go to the city.

With so many lines running through woods, it helps to know who clears what. Appalachian Power maintains its primary lines and trims or removes trees that threaten them on its own cycle. The service line from the pole to your house is generally yours to keep clear, and the utility will disconnect it so a tree company can work.

Because the work is hazardous and no license screens operators, insist on a certificate of liability insurance and workers' compensation sent by the insurer.

Which hillside trees to deal with first

  • Act now

A tree is hung up in another above the house or road

Keep everyone clear and call. It will come down on its own schedule otherwise.

  • This week

A dead ash stands uphill within reach of the roof

Remove it soon. See dead tree removal.

  • This week

Soil has cracked or slumped around a large tree after heavy rain

Have the tree and the slope looked at.

  • Plan it

Limbs overhang the driveway on a healthy tree

Schedule pruning in the dormant season.

Warning signs on a wooded bank

  • Trunks curved like a hockey stick at the base

The slope has been creeping for years.

  • Fresh bare soil or a new scarp above the tree

    Recent movement.

  • Bark gone from the top half of an ash

Long dead and ready to break.

  • Water seeping from the bank after dry weather

Saturated ground, the usual setup for a slide.

Charleston, WV tree service questions

Does Charleston, WV require a tree removal permit?

Not for trees on private property. City trees along streets and in parks are handled by the city.

Can a tree on a steep bank behind my house be removed?

Yes, by climbing and rigging if the wood is sound. Long-dead trees are harder and may need to be felled in a controlled direction.

Who trims trees near power lines in Charleston, WV?

Appalachian Power maintains its primary lines. The line to your house is usually your responsibility, and the utility will drop it temporarily for safe tree work.

Why would a company leave the wood on site?

Carrying logs up a hillside by hand can double the labor. Leaving them stacked where they fall is a common way to keep the job manageable.
