Tree Removal and Tree Service in Cincinnati

Cincinnati is built on steep hillsides that slide, and taking trees off them is not a simple decision. On the street side, every parcel carries a yearly forestry assessment that funds the city's care of public trees.

Who takes care of the street tree in Cincinnati?

The city does. Cincinnati Parks' Urban Forestry team maintains trees in the public right-of-way, funded by an annual assessment on every parcel. It is collected on the Hamilton County property tax bill.

What the assessment buys
Round-the-clock response to downed public trees, a six-year preventive pruning cycle, stump grinding and a replacement for every tree removed.
Removal requests
Forestry removes a public tree only when it is dead, diseased, declining, defective or damaged. Requests go through the city's 311 service.
Private work on a public tree
Needs a public tree work permit, as does any work within 15 feet of one.

Why Cincinnati hillsides move

The hills that ring the basin, from Mount Adams and Clifton to Price Hill and Mount Washington, are cut into the Kope Formation, a thick stack of shale with thin limestone layers. The shale weathers into slick clay, and the soil on top of it creeps downhill whenever it is saturated.

The city's zoning code treats a 20 percent slope on Kope bedrock as evidence of critical stability, and it warns that conventional development there can set off landslides and heavy erosion. Hillside Overlay Districts map the areas where extra standards apply.

Tree roots are part of what holds these slopes. Clearing a wooded hillside for a view, or grinding out every stump, removes that reinforcement over the following years as the roots rot.

The public tree work permit and the beetle quarantine

The Cincinnati Parks permit form covers planting, pruning, removing, applying chemicals to or otherwise affecting a public tree. It asks for species, tree lawn width and nearby utilities, and it is valid only for the dates written on it.

East of the city, part of Clermont County has been under an Asian longhorned beetle quarantine since the insect was found near Bethel. In March 2025 the U.S. Department of Agriculture released 5.2 square miles from the regulated area, but most of Tate Township and all of the village of Bethel remain inside it. Firewood, logs and chips from host trees may not be moved out without authorization.

The beetle attacks maples above all, which make up a large share of Cincinnati's street and yard trees. Buying firewood where you burn it is the simplest way to avoid carrying it into the city.

Before removing a tree from a slope

Is the tree itself failing?
A dead or uprooting tree on a hillside should come out. A healthy one is doing structural work.
Leave the stump
On slopes the stump is usually cut low and left in place so the roots keep binding soil while replacements establish.
Replant quickly
Deep-rooted native trees and shrubs go in the same season where possible.
Watch the drainage
Downspouts and driveway runoff directed onto a slope cause more slides than tree removal does.
Bring in an engineer for cracks
Leaning retaining walls, stair-step cracks or a scarp in the yard call for a geotechnical opinion, not only a tree company.

Trouble signs in a Cincinnati yard

  • Trees on a slope with trunks curved like a pistol grip

The soil has been creeping for years. New tilting means it is speeding up.

  • Perfectly round holes about the width of a pencil in a maple

Possible Asian longhorned beetle exit holes. Report them to the state. Do not move the wood.

  • Standing dead ash

Killed by emerald ash borer and now brittle. Most need a lift or crane.

  • Bush honeysuckle crowding the base of large trees

It hides root problems and shades out the seedlings that would replace old trees.

  • A silver maple or pear with a split crotch after a windstorm

The remaining half is unbalanced and often follows.

Cincinnati tree service questions

What is the Urban Forestry assessment on my Cincinnati tax bill?

A yearly assessment based on the street frontage of your parcel that funds the care of public street trees.

Can I remove the street tree in front of my Cincinnati house?

Not on your own. It is a public tree. The city removes public trees that are dead, diseased, declining, defective or damaged, and any private work on one needs a permit from Cincinnati Parks.

Will cutting trees on my hillside cause a landslide?

It can raise the risk over several years as roots decay, especially on slopes of 20 percent or more over Kope shale. Keep healthy trees where you can, leave stumps and replant.

Is the Asian longhorned beetle in Cincinnati?

The known infestation is in Clermont County, east of the city, where a quarantine remains over most of Tate Township and Bethel. Report suspicious holes in maples to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
